calm a dog

boeken tip

1.) Ignore the behavior.
Dogs seek attention from you. By rewarding them with attention during hyperactive outbursts, you are actually reinforcing the very behavior you want to stop. The next time your dog jumps or snaps at you excitedly, give it a try: Don't touch. Don't talk to your dog. No eye contact. You'll be surprised how quickly your dog calms down.

2.) Give your dog a task.
Having a task can help tremendously for busy dogs. Hyperactivity can come from psychological needs of your dog. By giving your dog a task, you can redirect hyperactivity so that your dog's energy goes toward something positive. The task should have a clear beginning and end and should never be a substitute for regular exercise. For example, teach your dog small tricks like this one: https://youtu.be/cWutm-WL1oA

3.) Go for a walk.
If your dog is building up a lot of energy, a brisk walk can be an excellent way to calm your dog down. Once your dog has burned all his energy he will be too tired to jump and bite at home. Without the frustration of being inside, he will find it much easier to relax.

4.) Control your own energy.
Your dog is like a mirror. Any energy you radiate, he will reflect back. Are you calm? Are you confident? Or do you have worries from the busy school week? Dogs are very sensitive to their master's mood. Your behavior can affect your dog's behavior. So make sure you set a good example yourself!

5.) Try aromatherapy!
Dogs experience the world primarily through smell! The smell of lavender causes people to relax, a soothing scent can also have a calming effect on your dog. At the pet store they can tell you more about this.
