Cystitis click here
Cystitis or cystitis is a common condition in dogs. Usually the cause is a bacterial infection of the bladder or bladder stones or bladder stones. Unlike bladder infections in humans, the condition is equally common in female and male dogs.
Symptoms
The dog will try to urinate very often. Only a small amount (a few drops) of urine always comes out. The urine often looks cloudy and may also contain blood.
If a bladder infection is not treated, there is a risk that it will spread to the upper urinary tract and the kidneys. An infection of the kidneys can become life-threatening.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made by examination of the urine. The urine contains proteins, white blood cells and possibly also blood. In many cases, crystals will also be found that may indicate the presence of bladder stones.
Therapy
Treatment will consist of antibiotics. If crystals are present, the dog will be put on a special diet that prevents the formation of the crystals. If bladder stones are present, surgery will be performed.
Prognosis
Usually excellent, but if crystals are present there is a good chance that the infection will come back or that bladder stones will formn.
